Artist StatementA classmate once said to me "You will always photograph because it is your passion..."Time has proven these words to be true. Photography has been the one constant in my life for over thirty years; my vocation and my avocation. When I photograph, I feel a transcendence and excitement. I look to connect to an inner discovery reflected in visual metaphor. The excitement, on a purely visual level is represented by the gradation and richness of black and white tones, the quality of light, layers of texture and spatial relationships. Photography is my tool for emotionally connecting to the world. The ocean has long been a source of inspiration. It varies its moods in light, wind and season yet has a unchanging inner truth. Its evolving beauty and mood are a constant visual challenge. I find myself drawn to rugged coastlines and weather beaten architecture. Respect for the unique, passing human presence and the extraordinary in the mundane are constant motifs in my work. Honoring the forgotten, recording the soon to change, and paying homage to the ephemeral presence of light are my missions. I embrace the act of photographing; I love living the life in search of the next image. To be surprised at the unexpected, to rush to capture the fleeting feeling of rapidly changing light and the thrill of the quest fulfilled; that is my passion. What I photograph is instinctive and intuitively my own. My photographs are more telling about my spirit than words can ever be. |
